AMERICAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY SINCE THE 1930S

Christopher Brookeman

This is a study of the ‘sociology of culture’ in America since the 1930s. As Christopher Brookeman points out, there are many possible approaches to the cultural and intellectual history of a period, and he focuses on the controversies about the nature of culture which emerged as literary and cultural critics coped with the changing economic, social and intellectual climate in the United States after the Second World War

The specific contributions of a representative group of influential literary, fine art and film critics are examined in the context of theoretical issues such as the debate on mass culture and the role of an avant-garde. The part played by social scientists such as Daniel Bell, Margaret Mead and Herbert Marcuse, by individual critics, and by groups such as the Frankfurt School, the New Critics, the New York intellectuals and painters and the New Journalists is fully discussed.

Particular art forms-film, photography and painting, as well as literature -are analysed in the context of these cultural debates, and Christopher Brookeman strikes a balance across disciplines for students of American Studies, showing how connections between the many cultural products of American society can be made. In common with other books in the series, points made in the text are Supported by full notes and a bibliography.

Christopher Brookeman is Senior Lecturer in English and American Studies and Programme Director of the American Studies Resources Centre at the Polytechnic of Central London.
