A new turn was given to the detective story by Chesterton’s Father Brown who, on his own different plane, has challenged the supremacy of Sherlock Holmes as a character in his own right in addition to his standing as an unraveller of mysteries. For Chesterton the spiritual implications of crime were of paramount importance, the exposure of the criminal secondary; yet he combined both problems in stories which have retained their literary and narrative interest. Readers both old and new will find in the present volume the best of a unique contribution to English detective fiction.
The eighteen stories have been chosen (from the original five separate Father Brown volumes) by Monsignor Ronald Knox, who has also contributed a critical appreciation in his specially-written Introduction.
