Applicability in Experimental and Clinical Settings
Henk Johan N. Streefkerk

The Excimer Laser-Assisted Non-occlusive Anastomosis (ELANA) technique is a technique with wich the neurosurgeon is able to make a vascular connection to the major cerebral blood vessels, without (temporarily) occluding the recipient artery. The ELANA technique was first discried by Tulleken er al in 1993, and has been in continuous development ever since. After the first series of succesful experiments in the animal laboraroty, Tulleken proceded to use this technique in patiens who are in need of cerebral bypass surgery. During teh last decade, more than 300 rabbit experiments have been performed and over 250 patients have been treates.
